Working with a fractional design & product partner

FAQ

Frequentlyasked questions

What is a fractional Head of Design?

A fractional Head of Design is a senior design leader who embeds with your team part-time instead of joining full-time. You get strategic product, UX, and brand leadership — the person actually doing the work — without the cost, overhead, or hiring lead time of a full-time executive. It’s built for founders who need senior craft now, not in six months.

How is this different from hiring a design agency?

Agencies route you through account managers and junior handoffs, and need tightly defined scopes before they start. I work embedded and direct — no translation layers, no junior handoffs. I join your Slack, ship weekly, and give feedback that improves the product, not just the pixels. It’s closer to a co-founder relationship than a vendor one.

How is it different from a full-time hire?

A full-time senior design hire means months of recruiting, equity, and long-term commitment before any work ships. Fractional gives you strategic thinking and execution from day one, scaled up or down as you need it. You get senior-level output immediately, without the overhead or the risk of a permanent hire that may not fit your stage.

What does a typical engagement look like?

Engagements are embedded and weekly. Expect unlimited requests, working sessions and workshops, a standing weekly meeting, and design that ships continuously rather than in big-bang deliverables. I plug into your existing developers and product managers so the work moves at startup speed and lands in production — not just in Figma.

What stage of company do you work with?

I work with founders and startup teams — typically from pre-seed through Series A — who need to define and build the right thing quickly. The work is strongest when things are still messy: shaping the vision, testing assumptions, and moving fast. I take on a small number of clients a year to stay genuinely embedded.

What do you actually deliver?

Product design (UX/UI), brand and positioning, design systems, marketing websites, prototypes, and pitch or investor decks. In practice it ranges from zero-to-one product flows and Figma component libraries to full visual identities and high-converting sites — whatever moves the business forward at that moment.

What industries do you focus on?

Most of my work is in AI/ML, fintech, crypto/Web3, and productivity and data platforms, with selective work in biotech/health, climate, and legal tech. The common thread is venture-backed startups solving a hard problem where design is a genuine competitive advantage, not decoration.

How much does it cost?

Pricing is scoped per engagement, because every founder’s stage, scope, and timeline are different. Rather than a fixed package, I put together a proposal tailored to what you actually need. The fastest way to get a number is to start a conversation — tell me what you’re building and I’ll come back with a clear scope.

How quickly can you start?

Because there’s no hiring process, engagements can usually begin within days, not months. Availability depends on current client load — I deliberately keep the roster small — so the best move is to reach out early. I reply to every inquiry within 24 hours.

Where are you based?

I’m based in Toronto, Canada, and work remotely with founders and startup teams across North America and beyond. Embedded collaboration happens over Slack and weekly calls, so location is rarely a constraint.
