A twenty-year-old deciding what to do with their life will not read a careers portal. They will spend two hours on an app that is fun. Career Plan set out to put the first thing inside the second: real, peer-reviewed advice in something a student opens without being told to.
Nobody opens a careers portal
Nothing had been built yet, which made the risk easy to see. If it felt like advice, students would not open it. If it felt like a toy, they would not trust the advice. That balance had to be found in prototypes, not argued about in a document.
Prove it in the smallest detail
The answer turned up in the small screens rather than the big ones. One view lets a student record their voice to rehearse a pitch. That single screen is the whole idea: fun to use, slightly embarrassing, and genuinely the part that helps.
The product vision and the iOS app were designed from nothing, with the founders. The prototypes did the arguing.
